History Since First Found as an Older Adult

The following is a reproduction of the records kept by Richard F. Hoyer over the lifetime of this snake up until she was transferred to me in the Spring of 2001. Only minor edits have been added and in most cases are noted with [ ] . My comments have been added in Italics.

06/20/71	[First time found] at old Raab Mill site in South Corvallis near Marysville Golf Course. Length: 27 ½ inches, Weight: 130.8 grams. Large incompletely healed wound at left side 6” from head and healed scar on opposite right side.
09/21/71	Shed skin.
09/30/71	Released where found.
04/15/73	Found near where female #2 originally captured, under particle board near east fence. 124.6 grams, 28 1/8 inches.
05/27/73	Released where found.
06/24/73	Found (and left) crossing N-S road at north central part of site.
04/15/74	Found under particle board at mid east end, 28 1/8 inches, 118.9 grams.
04/20/74	Released same spot.
04/18/75	Found under tin on east side of slash pile near entrance road and mill (south site) 28 ¼ inches, 101.0 grams. Tail tip now has bone showing. Tip of tail seems to have been reinjured but mostly healed now. Description remains the same.
04/19/75	Released where found.
04/18/76	Found under [ ] particle board. 161.4grams, 28 3/8 inches.
04/25/76	Released where found.
06/04/76	Under big particle board at east fence, 28 5/8 inches 206.2 grams. Meal within. Numerous very large (Gopher?) rodent bite wounds over most of body. In best shape ever [eating well, putting on weight].
06/10/76	Released where found.
10/20/76	Found under particle board with “STOP” on it, 113.2 grams, 28 5/8 inches. Has given birth to a brood of young since last capture.

04/28/79	Ate one young Townsend vole at 6.0 grams, 2 young lab mice at 5.5 grams each, and 1 small lab mouse at 7.2 grams.
05/11/79	Killed and ate one small Grey-tailed vole of 9.0 grams, fed 2 small Grey-tailed voles, 8.0 grams each, one small lab mouse (6.8 grams) and two baby quail.
05/18/79	Ate one live young Townsend vole, one young lab mouse (4.8 grams), and two adult deer mice (16.1 grams each).
05/23/79	Released where found.
04/15/80	Under [] sign, 143.1 grams, 28 ¾ inches – moderately big gouge on right side mid body, tail tip all reinjured.
04/30/80	Released where found.
05/05/80	Male #18 courting this female under [] sign.
04/20/81	Under [] sign, 122.6 grams, 28 7/8 inches. Tail tip still not totally healed, mottling faint and now medium coverage.

09/27/83	Released at Adair, North F site.
	Several months earlier, neighborhood kids showed interest in what Dad was doing when lifting boards at the Raab Mill site. He explained to them about the snakes, and what he was doing with them. Shortly thereafter, snakes that were commonly seen were no longer found. It became apparent(likely) that these kids were catching and keeping all the snakes. For this reason, and the fact that the site was becoming overgrown and hard for her to find food, she was relocated to Camp Adair north of Corvallis about 10 miles from her original home.

04/12/87	F north #13 (with big male Garter Snake), 129.1 grams, 29 5/8 inches, appears to be just out of hibernation – a few mole or shrew type bite marks on body.
04/18/87	Released where found.
04/24/88	F north #13, 129.2 grams, 29 ½ inches.
04/30/88	Ate 4 mice - one 12.6 Townsend vole, and three lab mice at 9.6 grams each, released where found.
05/23/88	Same spot, 136.0 grams, (not measured).
06/02/88	Shed skin.
06/05/88	Fed one small lab mouse (7.8 grams) and 2 newborn lab mice, released where found.
06/27/88	Observed and left under F north #13.
04/09/89	F north #13, 89.0 grams, 29 3/8 inches, doesn’t look good, has partially healed injury, very large (massive) injury left dorsal surface of back just below mid point. Snake appears to have just emerged from hibernation – dirty.
04/10/89	Fed 12/6 gram Northern Alligator lizard – placed with captive boas.
04/22/89	Fed 3 young Townsend voles, 6.5 grams each, and one adult deer mouse.
04/23/89	Shed skin.
05/01/89	Fed one baby Grey-tailed vole, 3.5 grams, one young Townsend vole, 8.0 grams, and 2 lab mice at 8.5 grams each.
05/05/89	Fed two ½ grown lab mice.
05/10/89	Fed one young Grey-tailed vole, and two small adult wild house mice, and large section of Southern Alligator lizard tail.
05/14/89	Released under F north #13. Weight = 157.2grams with part of last meal still within.
05/27/89	F north #13. Weight = 130.7 grams, not measured. Will retain. Fed 2 young Townsend voles at 7.1 grams each – retained.
06/30/89	Weight = 127.0 grams, force fed 4 young lab mice at 4.6 grams each, Released at F north 13.
07/20/89	Pickedup again under F north #13 at Adair and has shed recently, 123.1 grams, not measured. Will try to retain again as she is not doing great at Adair and may be hybred for lilac gene.Force fed 4 mice (lab) 5.0, 6.8, 6.8, and 6.8 grams respectively.
07/28/89	Force fed 3 small deer mice at 4.5 grams each and one young Townsend vole at 6.2 grams.
08/01/89	Force fed 2 lab mice at 7.2 grams each.
08/22/89	Weight = 123.1 grams – Fed one 4.3 gram small deer mouse – regurgitated twice and refed both times with vitamin supplement.
08/30/89	Fed two deer mice young at 4.1 grams each and 40 mg multi-vitamins.
09/08/89	Shed skin. Fed one 3.2 gram Grey-tailed vole and 4 [thawed] baby lab mice at 2.2 grams each and 10-12 mg suppliment.
09/18/89	Fed 3.8 gram Townsend vole and 3.1 gram lab mouse plus 10 mg emptoyl + 20 mg multivitamins.
09/30/89	Fed 2.7 gram lizard and 20 mg multivitamins.
04/10/90	Fed 4.6 gram Grey-tailed vole young.

06/15/90	First voluntary meal – took prekilled 5.5 gram young Grey-tailed vole and chain fed 2 baby lab mice at 4.2 grams each.

07/03/90	Ate 2 baby deer mice at 3.0 grams each then fed 4 lab mice at 9.4, 5.1, 9.4, and 5.1 grams each, and young Grey-tailed vola at 6.3 grams.
07/06/90	Lost last four mice of meal.
07/08/90	Gave 0.1 ml of A and D vitamins.
07/19/90	Fed 4.8 gram young Grey-tailed vole, and 2 young lab mice at 5.1 grams each.
08/02/90	Fed 2.0 grams newborn Grey-tailed vole, 6.3 gram young Townsend vole and 12.2 baby lab rat.
08/10/90	Fed 3 nestling shrews at 3.3 grams each and 2 deer mice young at 6.8 grams each.
